Today marks the 20th anniversary of Yemen's North-South Unification. While people in the North proudly display flags and hang banners to celebrate the occasion, many in the South see it as a slap in the face from a government dominated by northerners who oppress and marginalize the South, and pilfer natural resources to fatten their wallets. It is not uncommon to see violent protests in southern provinces around this time of the year, but it has been relatively quiet so far this year. For those who live in the capital city, Unification Day means a day off, nicely decorated streets, fireworks, and most important of all NO power cuts for five days in a row. Woo hoo. I was finally able to finish redesigning my website! Here are some photos I took last night at Maidan Al Tahrir (Liberation Square) while out for a stroll with Regine.
